About Us
Castleisland District Heritage, under the name of the Michael O’Donohoe Memorial Heritage Project, was established in 2014 by a voluntary committee of four, changing its name to Castleisland District Heritage in 2020.
Over the course of ten years, Castleisland District Heritage has established a considerable archive of documents (including the Presentation Convent Collection Castleisland, Con Houlihan Papers and Timothy Murphy Collection), books, photographs and artefacts relating to local history, and has published over 300 articles on its website. Castleisland District Heritage has welcomed countless people in its offices, including author Thomas Keneally, and assisted with genealogical references and identifying local places. Castleisland District Heritage campaigned for the Posthumous Presidential Pardons of John Twiss and Sylvester Poff and James Barrett – all three men Pardoned by President Michael D Higgins in 2021 and 2024. Both cases featured on the BBC1 documentary, Murder Mystery and My Family.
Castleisland District Heritage is not publicly funded and welcomes donations of any kind. A voluntary committee continues to drive this local history and heritage project.
